Media Statement from KwaZulu Natal Media Centre Corporate Communication South African Police Service 1 June 2013 The KwaZulu-Natal police’s determination to weed out the illicit drug trade continues to yield excellent results. For the past month, undercover police operatives bought mandrax and cocaine worth R10, 000-00 on five separate occasions from a suspected drug dealer in the Wentworth area. Yesterday, 31 May 2013 at 13:00 in a joint operation by the KwaDukuza Cluster Task Team, National Intervention Unit, Durban Metro Police and Durban K9 Unit the 26-year-old man was nabbed at his flat in Wentworth. Police officers armed with a search warrant, entered the suspect’s flat at Reiger Road, Wentworth and conducted a search. During the raid police recovered an unlicensed firearm with seven live rounds of ammunition. Cocaine with an estimated value of R1, 200-00 and an electric scale were also recovered from the flat. A search was also conducted in the area around the flat and 133 rounds of ammunition as well as an assortment of drug paraphernalia was recovered. The suspect was arrested and charged with five counts of dealing in drugs and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He will appear the Durban Magistrates Court on Monday, 3 June 2013. The firearm that was recovered from him was reported as stolen in the Phoenix area during 1996. Ballistic tests will be conducted to establish if the firearm was used in the commission of any other report crimes. The Provincial Commissioner was ecstatic with the results of both operations. “We would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the community for their active participation in the fight against drug dealers living within their neighborhood. It is through such initiatives that we can deal decisively with the drug scourge that is destroying our youth. There are many projects currently underway in this Province and in the months to come we will see more of these drug peddlers behind bars,” she said.
